Rococo under Construction - The Making of Augustusburg Palace
For the first time, the exhibition offers a comprehensive insight into the process by which Brühl’s current World Heritage Site came into being. The focus is on the ‘making of’ one of the most significant buildings of the European Rococo period – a major 18th-century construction project with a pan-European influence.
Who was involved in building the palace? Which figures lie behind the names? What planning, artistic and craftsmanship processes underpinned this major construction project? The exhibition profiles key figures such as François de Cuvilliés, Balthasar Neumann and Carlo Carlone, as well as lesser-known artisans.
Interactive media and hands-on stations bring historical techniques to life – including fresco, stucco and gilding work.
The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States, the Rudolf-August Oetker Foundation, the Friends of Brühl’s Palaces and Gardens e. V. and the Rhineland Regional Council.
The Exhibition at a Glance
The special exhibition will be on display from 27 June to 1 November 2026 in the rarely shown Yellow Apartment at Augustusburg Palace in Brühl.
